Bischöfliches Palais Graz-Seckau
Revitalization of the episcopal palace
2001–2005
Completed
Interior, Revitalisation
The Bishop’s Palace is one of the oldest continuously used buildings in Graz. Since 2001, a large part of the townhouse has been adapted and partially revitalized to meet the requirements of modern and functional use.
These renovation works include various construction phases: In the bishop’s offices, a burgundy archive wall was inserted, cutting through the sequence of rooms to provide the offices with a backbone and ensure an efficient workflow. Glass doors and corners, along with a light strip, bring both visual and communicative transparency. The first floor houses a fresco room with wall paintings from the 13th century, which has been carefully restored and transformed into a meeting room. Offices and the porter’s lodge have been redesigned into clear, modern workspaces, presenting a contemporary counterpart to the historic palace.
